On Fear

There are very few monsters who warrant the fear we have of them.
(Andre Gide)
In life, it becomes too easy to fall into the trap of not doing anything because it is safe. We know what we want, we know what we need to do to get what we want, but we end up not doing anything, if the process requires us to leave our comfort zone. Fear of the unknown outweighs the rewards of achieving our goals. We tend to overthink every little detail, magnify in our minds every possible way that things can go wrong, and end up concluding that the possibility of success cannot outweigh the all too real likelihood of failure. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy-- our overwhelming fear of failure makes failure inevitable. We freeze and fail simply because we refuse to even just try.
In times like this, impulsiveness becomes a virtue. Let your instincts rule, stop thinking, and just do what you have to do, consequences be damned. In hindsight, when the dust settles, you realize that acting with courage in the face of what you fear, whether you do get what you want or not, is the ultimate reward.
